'Mirattal' (Tamil)

A story and screenplay with no novelty or excitement make Mirattal an average fare.

'Mirattal' (Tamil)

Director: Madesh

Cast: Vinay, Sharmila, Prabhu, Santhanam

Innumerable films have been made focusing on the rivalry between two dons, where a youth caught in the fracas uses his brawn and brains to escape tricky situations. The youth  — owing allegiance to one of the thugs and falling for his sister/daughter (depending on who plays the don!), is another oft repeated part of this scenario. 'Mirattal', a remake of the Telugu 'Dhee', replicates this plot. But with no punch, novelty or excitement in the screenplay, the film is an average entertainer, at the most.

While his earlier films exploited his chocolate-boy looks, Vinay gets to do some action scenes and fights here. His good looks  seem to have been given the go-by here, the actor cutting a shabby picture. He has done what was expected of the role, though not leaving much of an impression. He plays Babloo, who is brought in as an accountant by don Shankar dada (Prabhu) to keep count of all of the dada's illegally earned money. The inevitable happens when Shiva falls for the don’s comely sister (Sharmila). The romantic interludes between the duo are far from engaging. Sharmila — a promising find (from the Kannada screen), gets her lip-sync right, but could have worked more on her expressions.

Cutting a handsome picture in his black outfit and adorned with jewels, Prabhu fits in suitably as Shankar dada. As the rival don, Rawat appears now and then, having little to do, except bellow with fury. His bare chested, muscle-packed frame adorned with ornaments, the don posing the same way in every scene, repeats almost the same lines throughout. His does an ‘all fury and less of action’ role. His mission to kill Shankar dada's sister from the movie’s early scenes are a total failure, with the script heavily loaded in the hero's favour.

There are quite a few comedians here like Santhanam, Ganja Karuppu and Pandiarajan. But they hardly tickle funny bones. Santhanam does generate some fun moments, but the spontaneity is missing for the most part.
