Review: Iravum Pagalum Varum

Malini Mannath

Film: Iravum Pagalum Varum

Director:  Bala Sriram

Cast: Mahesh, Ananya, A Venkatesh, Jegan, Yuvarani

His debut in Angadi Theru gave him a break which few newcomers could have dreamed of. But Mahesh has not been able to consolidate his position. His new venture Iravum Pagalum Varum, despite the director’s effort to present a freshness in its screenplay and narration, fails to touch a chord again. The early scenes are about Karthi (Mahesh) and his activities with his friend Jegan. A college student, Karthi indulges in petty thieving. And when he is caught, he admits he does it to meet his pocket expenses.

This gets him entangled in the affairs of a ruthless dishonest cop, who runs his own gang of thieves. Though Venkatesh revels in his role of the cop obsessed with the yellow metal, his scenes are overdone. The whole episode of the gang in the guise of magicians distracting the neighbourhood, while a few of them break into houses, provide the better moments in the film. Karthi’s oattraction for Sona (Ananya) takes a long time to evolve. It is a battle of wits between the hero and the cop, with Sona inadvertently caught in it. There are many twists towards the end, lending a new meaning to the past. Iravum Pagalum...’is a case of good intention gone haywire.
