Average Entertainer on Predictable Lines

Malini Mannath

The plot centres on the stormy love affair between a village landlord’s daughter and their faithful driver. It opens on a shabby, bearded and obviously distressed youngster Ayyanaar who wonders how his lady love Karthika was faring in her new life. The story travels back to the happenings that led to Ayyanar leaving his home and his love. The youngster’s extreme loyalty to the family of landlord Ratna Kumar (Naren) and the latter’s blind trust in him is depicted with realism and conviction.

It’s a confident portrayal by debutant Varma, who essays Ayyanaar with assurance. The debutant brings out impressively the dilemma of the protagonist caught between love and loyalty. Mahima with her emotional prowess lends conviction to Karthika. Gutsy and feisty Karthika professes her love to Ayyanar, vowing despite his rejection, that she would marry him alone.

The whole episode of Ayyanaar going to see a potential bride selected by his family, and the girl’s volte face later, is a believable scenario. Supporting actors like Kumar, Naren and Srikanth fit in suitably. In a forced-in villainy, baddie Adhilingam’s (Srikanth, the film’s producer) angst against Ratna Kumar, and his spiteful moves, follow on predictable lines. The director loads his screenplay with a high emotional quotient, bordering on the melodramatic. The end could have been better planned. With very few moments to relish, the film is an average entertainer.
