The film is about an alcoholic cop who is persuaded to return to service to investigate a series of grisly murders. An adaptation of the Malayalam film Memories, director Arivazhagan has almost faithfully stuck to the original.
For Arulnidhi experimenting with varied characters, the role of Arvind is different. Arvind’s family had been killed by the criminal elements he had taken on. In a state of depression, the cop is coaxed back to investigate a series of methodical, ritual murders of married men who had disappeared earlier. The early half has Arvind in a constantly inebriated state, disturbed by his memories.
Though Arulnidhi has played it in his style, one felt a more mature take would have helped. Also, he could have let down his defences in the intimate interludes shared with Aishwarya Rajesh, who plays his wife. Adept in the action scenes, Arulnidhi comes into his own in the second half where Arvind tracks the clues and tries to be a step ahead of the killer.
Robot Shankar’s investigating cop Sargunam falls somewhere between the comic and the serious, the actor not quite able to get it right. Thaman’s music and Arvind Singh’s visual take help sustain the mood and feel. Despite the glitches, Aarathu Sinam is a thrill-ride that keeps one entertained for the most part.
