This actor from Mysore likes to keep a low profile. But what is unfortunate for Sourav has been the fact that prospects too have been low for him, despite having been in the industry for 10 years and acting in 16 films. Sourav made his debut in the 1998 film Veerappa Nayaka, in which Vishnuvardhan and Shruthi played the lead pair. S Narayan had handled the megaphone for that film. Veerappa Nayaka was a box office hit. Yet opportunities evaded Sourav. To compound his bad luck, many of his other movies bombed at the box office. He was one of the heroes in Bhoothayyana Makkalu. He played the lead role in films such as Joot, Cheluve Ondu Helthini, Yahoo and Navabharathi.
He played the CBI officer in the recently-released multistarrer movie Navagraha, which completed 50 days of screening at many theatres across Karnataka. Monica, who was in the news for all the wrong reasons for her alleged involvement in the Neeraj Amarnath Grover murder case, had played Sourav’s heroine in Joot.
She also hails from Mysore. Can Sourav recall his association with Monica during shooting? “She was normal and cooperated very well,” says Sourav with a smile.
On his films being few and far between, Sourav said, “I am in a dilemma about it. Many people in the industry know me. But very few producers and director come forward to make films with me. They are encouraging a number of newcomers due to reasons best known to them. I don’t know why they are averse to offer films to me,” regrets Sourav.
How did Sourav make debut in Kannada films? “I never thought of acting in films. I happened to visit one of my well-wishers, Dr Sharma, in Bangalore. He asked me whether I was interested in movie roles. I just said yes.
He recommended me to director Narayan for the film Veerappa Nayaka. Later, a few more offers followed.
On his career prior to acting, he says, “I am basically a production engineer. I was working at Drona Steel Works in Chennai. After getting offers to act in films, I resigned the job ” recalls Sourav.
Next, see Sourav in Nee Bandhu Ninthaaga. Its shooting has been completed and post-production work is in progress. “I am playing a different character in this film.
It is a triangular love story. I play a pop singer and I have high hopes from this flick,” adds Sourav.
