The lure of playing a negative role that gives an actor more opportunities to perform has always fascinated actors. For Mumtaz the actor who has over 40 films to her credit, shifting into the baddie mode for Rajadhi Raja was a welcome break. And looks like she has taken to it like a fish to water with her Saidai Sylaja act in the film.
“It’s my first negative role and also a very lengthy one” says the actor. Returning to Tamil films after a long break post her Veerasamy, Mumtaz says, “I didn’t accept offers because nothing exciting came my way till this film.”she explains.
Playing a ganja seller turned politician, the actor shows her glam side too with a carefully chosen wardrobe complete with georgette saris, diamonte anklets, Rado watches, and designer blouses and shoes. “I spent hours with my costumer Ganesh and at leading sari stores to put together that look,” laughs Mumtaz. Mumtaz is on cloud nine since she has also dubbed for herself for the first time. “Sakti sir sat with me for six days teaching me the nuances of pronounciation,” she recalls.
So will she be seen playing more negative roles in future? “I don’t want to be branded as a negative character. But after 11 years of doing song, dance and glamour I want roles that will excite me enough to come to work each day!” she concludes.
