From our online archive

BANGALORE: Film: Thakath (Kannada) Cast: Vijay, Shuba Punja, Rangayana Raghu, Shobaraj, Avinash, Kashi, Satyajit, Mandya Ramesh, Padma Vasanthi, Achyut.

Director: M S Ramesh THIS film is aimed at the mass audience who loves action movies without bothering about the other aspects of film making.

The story goes — Basiya (Vijay) an ‘orphan’ is fostered by a bus driver (Satyajit) and conductor (Kashi).

Basiya becomes the cleaner of the bus in which Bhagya (Subha Punja), the daughter of Singarappa (Rangayana Raghu) travels from a village to Mysore to attend college. Inspired by Basiya’s good habits, Bhagya falls in love with him. Singarappa and his brother Bhadra (Shoba Raj) object to Bhagya’s love for Basiya.

Meanwhile, Basiya tries to keep Bhagya at an arm’s distance but in vain. Bhagya challenges him to fall in love with her. The climax of the film is all about how Bhagya’s parents create problems for Basiya and how does the latter overcomes them.

Vijay, who earned name and fame with the film Dhuniya, has excelled once again in the stunt sequences. His performance in such sequences is a treat to watch for front-benchers, in scenes like where he thrashes up a number of goons or mouthing punchy dialogues that are aimed at greedy and lewd affluent people. Stunt director Ram Shetty has done an excellent job in composing stunt sequences to showcase Vijay’s acting skills. However, Vijay needs improvement in delivering dialogues as many of his dialogues are difficult to understand.

As far as the performance of the heroine Shuba Punja is concerned, she has performed well in the dance and romantic sequences. If Shuba hones her acting in sentimental sequences, she will be an asset for the Sandalwood. Director Ramesh has utilised Avinash’s acting skills up to the optimum level and his performance, as the only Gowda who knows English, is superb. His dialogue ‘According to the law....’ and his costumes make one burst into bouts of laughter.

Mandya Ramesh, as a hijra, has also acted well. Music director Gurukiran has composed lilting music for two songs Bhagavantha Syaana...

and Kannambaadiya...

Thakath is worth watching if you are an action-movie buff.
