CHENNAI: Actor Arvind Swamy of Besant Nagar and his wife Gayathri Ramamurthy of Alwarpet have approached the Principal Family Court at the High Court campus seeking divorce on mutual consent.

They appeared before the presiding officer S Meenakshi Sundaram, who after examining them, posted the matter for orders on December 10.

The duo got married on June 3, 1994, and they had two children — Adhira Swamy and Rudra Swamy. Since their separation in December, 2003, the children had been living with Arvind Swamy.

They submitted in their application that due to incompatibility of temperament, they had not been able to lead a happy married life and were discontent with each other. Despite efforts by the elders, friends, relatives and well-wishers, the marriage irretrievably broke down.

They also expressly agreed that Arvind Swamy should retain the custody of the minor children. Agreeing that the welfare of the children was of paramount importance, they agreed for divorce on mutual consent. Arvind Swamy also agreed to make a one-time payment of Rs 75 lakh and pay a monthly maintenance of Rs 1 lakh to Gayathri, who would waive any right, claim or interest over any of the movable or immovable property of Arvind Swamy.

They prayed to the court to pass a decree and judgment dissolving the marriage.
