It’s a statement that raised several eyebrows. Actor Cheran’s recent announcement that he would do everything possible to re-release Vengayem, a film that has been directed by Sankagiri Rajkumar, has come to many as a pleasant surprise.
The actor, who was impressed by the storyline of Vengayem, decided that it was time that he did something to change its fortunes at the box office. As one of the office-bearers of the directors’ union, Cheran has also decided to screen the film once again to the audience. Says he, “Yes, I will be releasing the film soon and I want each and everyone in Chennai to watch that film. We are looking for distributors to release the film and so there has been a delay.”
Now, the director-cum-actor is waiting for the release of his upcoming flick, Muran, directed by Saajan Madhav. Cheran’s character as Nanda, is a soft-spoken musician, who finds himself in a trap. The man has proved yet again that he is a complete professional with Muran. In fact, he has mastered the art of playing the guitar, to get into the skin of the character. “I had a music teacher coming home everyday to teach me to play the guitar,” he says.
Also, in this film, Cheran sports a French beard, taking us back to his ‘Autograph’ days. So, is sporting a French beard a luck charm? “No,” he laughs. “Honestly, I couldn’t do anything else with my beard as it doesn’t grow longer. So I stick to this look and it suits me well.” He also states that Muran is nothing like other thriller films. “It’s soft and a clean action-thriller with no bloodshed and deaths.”
The film Muran did face a lot of hurdles. But after Cheran took up the project as a producer, Dhananjayan of UTV Motion Pictures, who has forayed into Tamil film production, volunteered to produce the rest of the film.
The Yuddham Sei actor has also signed another film titled, ‘City’, in which he plays the lead role along with actor Kishore. Says Cheran, “The film City is not just about Chennai and about various other cities in our country.”
