From our online archive

The teaser of Vetrimaaran and Dhanush's gangster trilogy Vada Chennai was launched today on Dhanush's birthday. The two are collaborating for the third time after Polladhavan' and Aadukalam (for which Dhanush won six National Awards, including that of Best Actor) for this film, which is said to be the first part of a trilogy.

Here's the teaser:

It's worth noting that the film was in pre-production stage for years as shooting schedules were delayed due to several factors including the National Award-winning filmmaker's 'Visaaranai' getting nominated for the Oscars, and Dhanush's commitments.

Going by the teaser, Vada Chennai (or North Chennai) looks like a gangster drama that has Dhanush playing the role of a local carrom player, who gets drawn into a mafia gang unwillingly. Set in the 1970s, the first part looks to be extensively shot in North Chennai.

Apart from Dhanush, the film also stars Aishwarya Rajesh, Andrea Jeremiah, Ameer Sultan, Daniel Balaji, Kishore, Samuthirakani, Pawan and Karunas.

The narrative of the film spans three decades and the teaser depicts the stars ageing through it.

Vada Chennai is jointly produced by Dhanush's Wunderbar Films and Lyca Productions.

The music is by Santhosh Narayanan. The movie is expected to be released in September.
