Redford retires: Looking back at the indie film godfather's career

Robert Redford announced on Tuesday that 'The old man and the gun' would be his last film.

As veteran Hollywood actor Robert Redford takes a bow from his illustrious acting career, here are some of his unforgettable films. 

Barefoot in the park (1959): The 'Godfather of indie films' began his career in the 1950s acting in Broadway shows. His first big hit was the show 'Barefoot in the Park', a romantic comedy about a newly wed couple and the change in their relationship after they move in to a small, leaky apartment. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969): After 'Inside Daisy Clover', he started turning down offers which added to the 'blonde male' stereotype before he found interest in 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' in 1969. The Sting (1973): 'The Sting' had the same combination as 'Butch...' in the lead - Paul Newman and Robert Redford - and was based on real life con men. The movie won seven Academy Awards and was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry for its 'cultural, historical and aesthetic significance.'

All the president's Men (1976): In 1976, Redford plays Bob Woodward in 'All the President's Men'- a political thriller on the Watergate scandal. Out of Africa (1985): Amidst his movies with political content, Redford played Denys Finch Hatton, an adventurer who is in an affair with Karen Blixen, a rich woman played by Meryl Streep in 'Out of Africa'. Redford and Streep play headstrong, independent spirits contending with a changing Africa and Blixen's dissolving personal life. When Streep's character asks Redford what is wrong with marriage, his answer is devastating: 'Have you ever seen one you admire?'

All is Lost (2013): A film with no dialogues, Redford plays a man who is on a solo adventurous journey in the Indian Ocean in All is Lost. Rotten tomatoes gave the movie 94% describing the movie as: 'anchored by another tremendous performance in a career full of them, All Is Lost offers a moving, eminently worthwhile testament to Robert Redford's ability to hold the screen.'
