How to celebrate month-end Dhanteras

Purnima Sriram Iyer

HYDERABAD: The twenty somethings now were toddlers when they must’ve heard the song, “So no one told you that life was gonna be this way. Your job is a joke, you are broke and love life’s is DOA…” We loved the song, but today, we comprehend the lyrics. To all the enegertic, ever-broke yet enthusiastic e-youngsters, here are a few ideas to celebrate Dhanteras without burning a hole in the pocket.
Before we dwell into the details, let me break the myth that its only gold and silver that should be bought on this auspicious day. One can buy anything and everything that brings them and their family happiness and becomes the first step to happiness. It is believed that whatever one would buy on this festival will reap profits in the long run.
With Dhanteras and Diwali on month end, we give some cues on what can be bought for Dhanteras under `500.

Quilling set
Quilling earrings, necklace and many more are making rounds. One can learn quilling through YouTube and making a small pocket money business out it. A quilling set is not more than Rs 300. One quilling earring is Rs 60. We can make 13 quilling earrings from one set. One can invest Rs 300 and earn Rs 780.

Oxidised
Silver earrings or necklace
Before one has moist eyes for not being able to afford gold or silver, one can opt for oxidized silver, which is in vogue and costs as low Rs 150. Also called black metal, it adds to the Boho style oomph factor.

Symbols
We have always enjoyed watching our grand dads stick the Swasthik and Om symbols on the walls during Diwali. It is believed that the auspcious symbols bring good luck (something that we are in dire need) into our lives. Those stickers are pocket friendly too.

Diary
For the all the disorganised souls, a diary is what we need. From writing down our contacts for a backup to pen down the to-do-it list but strictly not for writing your emotions, which is surely not good in the long run.

Nose rings
Women, who have nose piercings, here is an opportunity to change the old one to new. Silver nose rings with powerful designs on it is taking the style quotient several notches up. You can wear them even if you don’t have a piercing.

Books
Books and authors flourish because they connect with the readers. A few books have changed a lot of lives. Buy inspiring books from second hand market at Abids. (starts Rs 50)

Running Shoes
For all the dreamers, who are already working out at the gym from 11 pm to 6 am without even sweating can finally book some good running shoes and hit the gym. May be the shoes bought on that day can make us stick to the workout schedules and help us lose those extra pounds that we gained during Diwali and other panipuri and cheese dosa days.

painting brush
If you are an artist, buy a paint brush, the important tool for your craft. May be you are buying some luck too.

Broom
One can also buy a broomstick on Dhanteras. It is assumed our miseries and poverty (urban poverty too) gets swept away. It’s a belief and not a promise.

Helmet
Saving our head is sure to help us on a long run. Hyderabad roads are distressed and its better we save ourselves from the stress. If you are not brand conscious, there are trillions of helmets for Rs 500.  Go trendy and opt for the batman helmet.

brand New register
Startsups are in among the twenty something guys. Buying new accounts register would bring in some change. Faith matters.  Ushering in the new can often fill us with new hope and confidence. Even Feng Shui recommends the same. Try this out.

Phone covers that speak your mind
Okay, so you almost had a stroke the last time your phone slipped your hand. Give it another line of protection with a funky phone cover and add some attitude to it.  This trick works especially when you can’t afford a new phone this Diwali.
