HYDERABAD: While it was a day-long waterlogging at the busy Biodiversity junction during last week’s intense rainfall, this week it was the heavy traffic jam at Madhapur that left techies and commuters fuming over the poorly designed drainage pipelines and traffic management. The rainfall which intensified at 9 pm continued until 10 pm recording an extremely intense rainfall at 6.1 cm. This is the third straight time that Madhapur received such heavy rainfall in a span of one week.
The traffic moved at a snail’s pace at less than 2 km speed per hour. With techies and commuters being the worst hit due to the traffic, many of them had to wait until 1 am for the traffic to be cleared: the worst being the traffic from Madhapur to Jubilee Hills. The scene was no different at Kondapur, Kothaguda, Hitex junction, Gachibowli, Hitec City, Kukatpally and other places where traffic was jammed due to heavy waterlogging. Social networking sites which went abuzz had the netizens lament upon the pathetic state of affairs that derailed the city due to heavy rains.
One of the netizens tweeted “After my personal experience last night, we are not yet ready to be called a ‘vishwanagaram’ (global city).” Some of them even offered for essential supplies using social media. “If you are at Mindspace, it is better staying back and work overtime rather than to burn fuel and get frustrated,” read another tweet.
At Biodiversity junction, pipelines created waterlogging. The drains on Tuesday were overflowing covering up half of the road on the left side with sewer water. The drains gave up on the sudden influx of water and started to overflow at various parts. At Kukatpally, from where intercity and interstate buses start, several buses were stuck inside the city due to traffic jam until midnight before heading to its destination.
