Swine flu toll climbs to 60

With four more people succumbing to suspected swine flu, the nationwide toll due to influenza A(H1N1) rose to 60.

NEW DELHI/CHENNAI: With one person each succumbing to suspected swine flu in Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai and Jalna, the nationwide toll due to influenza A(H1N1) rose to 60 on Sunday even as 103 fresh cases of infection were reported, including five from Tamil Nadu.

Two persons who arrived in Chennai from Dubai and Singapore by flights were admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) at Tondiarpet after they showed symptoms of influenza A(H1N1).

On Saturday, four students of Madras Medical College were admitted to CDH after they tested positive for swine flu. The students had recently been to Kerala.

The total number persons, who have tested positive for swine flu virus and are undergoing treatment at CDH, now stands at 42.

Another swine flu case in the State was reported from Tiruvannamalai. Manikandan (19), a coolie of Dhadhapuram in Thandarambut was admitted to the Vellore Government Hospital in Adukamparai.  

In Mumbai, a 21-year-old pregnant woman died of swine flu at Kasturba Hospital. Pushpa Choudhary, a resident of Thane district, was admitted to the hospital on August 21 and was kept on ventilator. In Jalna, 26-year-old Anil Sheshrao Chavan died of swine flu at a mission hospital.

In Delhi, a 48-year-old man, who was admitted to RML hospital on August 20 with renal failure, fever and breathlessness, died on Saturday. He is suspected to be a swine flu victim. The hospital is waiting for his swab test report.

A 40-year-old woman in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district died of suspected swine flu at a private hospital in Panchkula.

Meanwhile, three cases of swine flu were reported from Hyderabad. They were admitted to Andhra Pradesh Chest Hospital.
