NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to direct further investigation by the CBI into the murder of Congress leader V G Patil, a case in which President Pratibha Patil’s brother G N Patil is the main accused.
The petition filed by V G Patil’s widow Rajni Vishram Patil alleged that he was killed because of intra-party rivalry. V G Patil, who was the president of the Jalgaon District Congress Committee in Maharashtra, was murdered by two assailants in the early morning of September 21, 2005.
She averred that her late husband had raised his voice over various irregularities and malpractice committed by G N Patil and Ulhas Patil and also complained to the party functionaries about them. V G had defeated G N Patil in the election to the post of DCC president. This defeat could not be digested by G N Patil and his associates, she alleged, adding that her husband had received some threat letters.
Police arrested Raju Mali and Raju Sonawane on September 25, 2005 in connection with the murder.
A probe by Aaj Tak TV revealed a confession by Raju Mali in the jail saying that G N Patil and Ulhas Patil were the masterminds behind the murder.
