MUMBAI: A six-member team of Indian students bagged two Silver medals, one Bronze medal and three Honorable Mentions (merit certificates) at the 51st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held at Astana, Kazhakstan today. Akashnil Dutta of Kolkata and Gaurav D Patil from Pune won Silver medals while Satyaki Mukherjee from Durgapur (West Bengal) won Bronze medal, Director, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) Dr H C Pradhan told PTI today.

Ronno Das from Kolkata, Akshay Degwekar and Anand Degwekar from Pune secured Honorable Mentions, he said. The IMO is held at Kazakhstan from July 2 to 14.

In all, 517 students from 96 countries participated in IMO which is an event meant for young meritorious students in mathematics. The Indian team was led by Prof B J Venkatachala of the Mathematical Olympiad Cell of HBCSE of TIFR, Bangalore.

Dr Joseph Amal Nathan, scientific officer from Reactor Design division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre was the Deputy leader of the team while Prof M B Rege, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong accompanied them as an Observer. The Mathematics Olympiad programme is organised under the aegis of the National Board for Higher Mathematics of the Department of Atomic Energy, Pradhan said, adding the final team was selected after a month-long training camp in April at the HBCSE. The team will be felicitated on July 15 at HBCSE, he added.
