Assault on cop: Five MLAs suspended

Ganesh N

Even as an FIR was registered on Wednesday against 14 MLAs for assaulting a police officer in the Maharashtra Assembly and five of them were suspended for nine months, the cop has said he wants to quit his job.

After summoning him to a breach of privilege hearing, MLAs led by Kshitij Thakur (independent) on Tuesday roughed up Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Suryavanshi, who had earlier fined the former for over-speeding.

Besides Thakur and Ram Kadam (MNS)-- both named by the police officer -- Pradeep Jaiswal (independent), Jaikumar Rawal (BJP), Rajan Salvi (Shiv Sena) were also seen in the surveillance video footage attacking the police officer and have been suspended.

The suspension  by Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil means the MLAs will not be able to attend the Monsoon and Winter sessions of the Assembly.

Meanwhile, Suryavanshi spoke to reporters. “I have been totally demoralised by the incident and have no interest in working in the force,” he said.
