Brazil supports India’s NSG bid

NEW DELHI: Following a day with strong focus on terrorism; India and Brazil on Monday got down to some business as they inked four MoUs. Brazil also supported India’s entry to the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

The four MoUs were signed in a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Michel Temer after the conclusion of the BRICS Summit in Goa. The agreements are on genetic resources, agriculture, animal husbandry, natural resources and fisheries; pharmaceutical products regulation; cattle genomics and assisted reproductive technologies and; investment cooperation and facilitation treaty.

Prime Minister Modi in a statement after bilateral meeting with the Brazilian President thanked him for understanding the “aspiration” of India for getting a seat in the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG). Brazil has also extended support for India’s bid to define terrorism at the UN by an early adoption of Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT).

"We thank Brazil for understanding India's aspiration for membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). We have made progress in cooperation in new areas including drug regulation, agro-research and cyber security. Will work closely at UN, G-20, G-4, WTO, BRICS and IBSA," Modi said.         

"We deeply appreciate Brazil's support for India's actions in combating terrorism. India and Brazil have agreed that world must come together to fight this menace without distinction or discrimination," Modi added while also referring to Brazil as among India’s one of the most important trade partners in Latin America.

Prime Minister Modi called Brazil a “natural partner” to India and President Temer who is seeking to revive the economy of the Latin American country also underlined the immense possibility of trade between the two countries. The Brazilian President on his arrival to India for the BRICS Summit had said that the trade between the two countries can triple in few years.
