GUWAHATI: Subodh Biswas and his close aide Subhash Biswas were brought to Guwahati in a Jet Airways flight on five days' transit remand on Wednesday evening around 8 pm. The duo was later taken to the guest house of the Special Branch of Assam Police.

ADG (law and order) Mukesh Agarwal, who supervised operations in West Bengal, said Subodh kept changing his hideouts. He added that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had personally monitored the progress of operations on an hourly basis over the past few days.

Agarwal said the duo would be interrogated and if need be, taken to Silapathar. Meanwhile, protesting groups and organisations in the State are demanding exemplary punishment for Subodh Biswas.

Subodh Biswas, responsible for the March 6 ransacking of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) office at Silapathar in northern Assam’s Dhemaji district, and his close aide Subash Biswas were arrested from North 24 Parganas in West Bengal early Wednesday.

Biswas, who is the president of Nikhil Bharat Bengali Uddastu Samannay Samiti (NBBUSS), had allegedly instigated a mob at a rally with his speech that led to the incident and had gone underground since.

There were apprehensions of tense law and order situations arising on transporting him to Assam given widespread protests following the incident.
