54 lives lost in military plane accidents in 4 years

NEW DELHI: Fifty-four lives were lost in accidents involving military aircraft including fighter planes since last four years, with 33 casualties in 2016-17 alone, the government said today.

In a written response to a question in Lok Sabha, Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State in the Defence Ministry, said 43 accidents involving military planes were recorded since last four years.

In response to another question, 617 complaints were registered against army officers in 2015 and 594 in 2016.

"The complaints are inquired into as per laid down provisions and guidelines on the subject and if any delinquency is established, appropriate action is initiated under the Army Act.

"Cases, where independent investigation is required are referred to the CBI," Bhamre said.

Replying to a question, the minister said during 2015 and 2016, two serving defence personnel, six retired defence personnel and two others have been apprehended for their alleged involvement in spying activities.

The minister said no case of infiltration of terrorists by breach of coastline during the last three years and the current year was reported.

However, the Indian Coast Guard has confiscated contraband with Tamil Nadu recording five cases, Gujarat and Lakhadweep recording two cases each and Maharashtra and West Bengal registering one case each.
