MUMBAI: India’s Top nuclear scientists on Friday hailed the government’s decision to launch mega projects for 10 indigenous nuclear reactors.
In a joint statement issued here, former chairmen of the atomic energy commission Dr. M R Srinivasan, Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Dr. Srikumar Banerjee and Dr. R K Sinha said that the decision is a timely and a bold step.
“The decision to construct reactors in a fleet mode is unprecedented in the history of India’s atomic energy program and demonstrates the determined vision of the present government to pursue accelerated expansion of nuclear power to ensure the nation’s energy security and meet India’s clean energy commitments,” the scientists said in the statement.
The fully indigenous project to construct the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) has sent out a strong message of the robustness of our domestic nuclear programme, and will help India come to the frontline of global nuclear supply and manufacturing chain, the statement added.
The statement is also signed by former chairman and managing director of Nuclear Power Corporation of India ltd (NPCIL) Dr. S K Jain and Homi Bhabha Chair at the Department of Atomic Energy Dr R B Grover.
