GUWAHATI: An Assam jailor was suspended after he allowed opposition leader Debabrata Saikia and Congress legislator Rupjyoti Kurmi to meet and click photographs with detained RTI activist Akhil Gogoi, an official statement said here on Friday.

In the statement issued by the Inspector General of Prisons - Assam, Dibrugarh Central Jail's jailor Arup Kumar Patangia was placed under suspension with immediate effect from Wednesday.

"The action was taken against the jailor on the basis of the report submitted by the Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh. Necessary action was also being taken against Jail Superintendent Bikash Bijoy Das.

"Jail being an out of bounds area where unauthorised entry of any persons is banned by Rule 26 of the Assam Jail Manual, the question of clicking of photograph inside by any such person does not arise," the statement added.

Saikia and Kurmi, an MLA from Mariani, were given permission by the Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh to conduct an interview with Gogoi on November 1.

They met the National Security Act detainee for about 45 minutes. After the interview, the leaders visited the inner premises of the jail where they clicked photographs.
