SRI NAGAR: The cold wave conditions in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified with Srinagar recording the coldest December night in 28 years with the night temperature dropping to -7.6 degrees Celsius.
Deputy Director Metrological Department Kashmir Mukhtar Ahmed said on Wednesday that the night temperature in Srinagar was -7.6 degrees Celsius. He said it was the coldest December night in Srinagar in the last 28 years.
On December 7, 1990, Srinagar had recorded night temperature of -8.8 degrees Celsius. Due to the intense cold, parts of the Dal Lake and other water bodies and water supply pipes and taps in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley were frozen.
Even waterfall in Tangmarg, in Gulmarg, has also frozen. Mukhtar said the remaining days of December would also be cold and night temperatures would hover between - 6 and -7 degrees Celsius. He said there is no possibility of snowfall till December 31.“There is a forecast for snowfall on January 2 and 3, but it’s for upper reaches of Kashmir,” Mukhtar said.
