BANDA: Tension gripped Behta village in Fatehpur district on Tuesday when a jute sack allegedly full of beef was spotted.
Trouble started when an incident of cow slaughter was reported in Behta village on Monday evening.
The next morning, some village women went to the pond and spotted a jute sack stuffed with beef.
They informed the police who recovered the sack.
News about the recovery of the meat spread like wildfire in the area and residents from a number of adjoining villages gathered at the site to protest.
The situation worsened when the mob vandalised a nearby madrasa and broke its wall while claiming that the beef was kept in the building. Some miscreants even tried to set the madrasa on fire.
Enraged by the vandalism, members of the other community also came out to protest.
Fatehpur DM Sanjeev Singh and SP Ramesh rushed to the village with a huge contingent of the police force and pacified the agitated villagers.
Later, the policemen registered a case of cow slaughter against two absconding men — Mushtak and Munnu Shah of the same village.
