Fed up with NHAI’s inaction, students fill potholes near their school
MANGALURU: Fed up with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) turning a deaf ear to their request to fix the potholes on a highway that runs close to their school, about 200 students of Bertrand Russel School at Baikampady decided to do it themselves on Saturday.

The students filled the potholes using bricks, mud and sand with the help of locals. The potholes had not only made the journey on this road bumpy but were also dirtying the students uniform as they walked along the road on their way to school and back home.
The school administration had requested the NHAI to repair the road a year ago, but it never bothered to act on it. Shopkeeper at Baikampady Shrikanth said the service of the students is really laudable. The students have taught a lesson to the government officials to do the important works in right time. “Seeing the potholes, no one will identify the stretch in Baikampady as a national highway,” he added.
Bertrand Russel School correspondent Nisha Kiran said the students from high school section participated in the social work of filling the potholes. The intention was to save lives from any accident or any kind of disturbance. Students and teachers responded well to the call. There was good support from public too, she added.
She informed that there was no response from the NHAI or from others from government’s side when the locals wrote letters to Deputy Commissioner, MLA, Mangaluru City Corporation and others.
