THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State police on Saturday decided to review the cases registered under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the state. The review will be held at the Police headquarters soon under the supervision of State Police Chief Loknath Behera.

In a press statement, Behera said the cases in which chargesheets have not been filed so far, will be reviewed.

In the review process, the authenticity of the cases including whether the cases were registered based on sufficient evidence and facts, will be examined with the support of legal experts.

The review will also provide an opportunity for the accused persons in these cases if they have any reasons to reprimand against the case, Behera said in a statement.  On Friday, Behera had issued a directive to his fellow officers to exercise vigil while slapping UAPA.

The directive is in the wake of a finding that officers did not pay adequate attention while framing charges in the FIRs registered against human rights activists recently.
The DGP had directed that police should ensure sufficient evidence and concurrence of district police chiefs before slapping such charges.
