KOZHIKODE : The City Police in association with the Health Department on Saturday launched a probe into the incident in which a five-year-old child died after consuming jelly candy from a bakery at Mofussil bus stand. The deceased is Yusufali, son of Basheer and Suharabi, of Palodiyil, Kappad.

The mother, who also fell sick after eating the candy, is undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College.

Following a complaint lodged by the family members of the child with the Kasaba police station, police and health officers raided the Royal Bakery. Health officers seized the remaining packets of jelly candy which were made by a Tamil Nadu-based firm.

According to the police, it was on Thursday the child and the mother ate the jelly candy from the bakery. On reaching home, the duo developed uneasiness and started vomiting. Though the child was admitted to the medical college on Friday morning, he breathed his last in the evening.

Health officers suspect the candy might have contained some poisonous substance or the chemicals used in the candy might have turned stale causing carcinogenic effect.

“The seized packets of candy will be subjected to a thorough examination at the food safety laboratory. We are waiting for the post-mortem report to know the exact cause of death,” the officers added.
