THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  The government has implemented the state human rights commission’s order that a woman born without uterus should be considered a disabled person. In the wake of an order by Commission member K Mohankumar, the government issued orders to include such women in the list of persons with 50 per cent disability. With this order, women born without uterus will be eligible for reservation in jobs, pension and free travel. A gynaecologist will be included in the medical board which issues disability certificate.

In a complaint before the Commission, a woman from Malappuram said the Medical Board had certified that her daughter did not have uterus. The woman said her daughter, who is suffering from many health complications due to the medical condition, should be considered as physically challenged.

The Commission sought the view of the state health department. The health department told the Commission that though a person born without an internal organ could not be classified as disabled as per laws, the government could take an appropriate decision.Mohankumar said the order would provide relief to many women suffering from the medical condition.
