MUMBAI: Well-known Marathi writer Subhash Bhende Monday died at his Bandra residence following cardiac arrest, his family said. He was 74.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said in a statement: "We have lost a legendary writer and a great thinker who represented the common man in his writings."

Minister of Water Resources Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar said: "His death is an irreparable loss to Marathi literary field. His work encouraged many young and budding writers."

Author of books such as Jethe Jato Tethe , Uddhvasta and Kinara , Bhende presided over the all-India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan held at Karad in 2003.
