Porsche’s Cayenne has been there for a long time. Now, the German giant has decided to add the Macan to it’s stable. The SUV’s production will start in 2013.

Knowing that only one SUV is not enough for the big and diversified Indian SUV segment, Porsche has decided to add its sibling Macan—from the Indonesian word for tiger—next year. The Macan will combine core characteristics of how a Porsche thinks a SUV should be. Combining suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics, the Macan will be the key pillar of the company’s strategy, codenamed ‘Strategy 2018’. The production of the new SUV will start from 2013 at the Porsche factory in Leipzig.

According to Bernhard Maier, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Porsche AG, “The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of an SUV, and is a genuine Porsche.”

The site is currently being expanded into an independent production plant with an investment of 500 million Euros, making it the biggest project in the company’s corporate history. The Macan will be the fifth SUV in its model range, and will target young, aspiring customers to the premium brand. The new facility will also increase the manufacturing capacity from the current 1,00,000 units per year that are produced by the two factories in Germany.
