Developers, developers, developers, developers…’. That was the notorious shout that Microsoft’s former CEO Steve Ballmer used whenever he wanted to excite the hundreds and thousands of developers that filled big football stadiums. Far from aimed at portraying him as a profusely sweating monkey that has just discovered cocaine, it was aimed at showcasing how important developers were to the company whose only real expertise was making software. The man responsible for keeping those developers happy at Microsoft is S Somasegar, the corporate vice president of the Developer Division and is responsible for developer tools and services like programming languages, the Visual Studio line of products and the all important .NET framework. Somasegar, originally from Puducherry and now living in Seattle, has a bachelor’s degree in electronics and communication engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy of Anna University and an MS in computer engineering from the Louisiana State University. While working for his PhD in computer engineering at the State University of New York in 1989, Somasegar was attracted by a then nascent company called Microsoft. Since joining the company, he has worked on eight releases of the Windows operating system. Now as a corporate vice president, Somasegar is also responsible for Cloud and Enterprise divisions of Global Development Centers situated in India, China and Israel. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Anna University in 2006 and was also the recipient of the Asian American Engineer of the Year award in 2008.
