NEW DELHI: Tamil filmmaker Bala won the award for best direction for Naan Kadavul, while Bollywood’s Priyanka Chopra bagged her first national award (Fashion) at the 56th National Film Awards for 2008, which saw a chunk of honours going to Marathi and Hindi movies.

The jury on Saturday said Antaheen (Bengali) was chosen as the best film, while A Wednesday won the Indira Gandhi Award for the best first film of a director. Upendra Limaye was the best actor — in Jogva (Marathi), which also fetched the trophy for the best film on social issues.

Kangana Ranaut won the best supporting actress award (Fashion), Arjun Rampal for best supporting actor (Rock On). Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye (Hindi) was voted best popular film.

The special jury award went to Malayalam film Bioscope.

Gubbachigalu (Kannada) won the award for the best children’s film. Hariharan and Shreya Ghoshal bagged the best playback singer award for male and female. Jogva also got the best music direction award.

The Nargis Dutt award for best feature film on national integration was bagged Aai Kot Nai (Assamese). In the regional films category, Tirakkatha (Malayalam) and Varanam Aayiram (Tamil), Vimukthi (Kannada) 1940 Lo Okagramam (Telugu) won.

AFSPA 1958 (Manipuri) was adjudged the best nonfeature film. The Films Division- produced The Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi — A Reconstruction was selected as best biographical/historical reconstruction film.

There were 126 entries in the feature film section.
