NEW DELHI: The Election Commission has written to the government seeking a CBI probe into the events leading to the recent scrapping of Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand.

In a letter to the Secretary, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension, the EC on Monday sought a CBI probe into the Rajya Sabha election that was cancelled as “it was vitiated”. Earlier, the Jharkhand High Court had asked the poll panel to arrange for a CBI probe into the matter.

“Having regard to the circumstances, the EC desires that the whole matter relating to elections to the Rajya Sabha be entrusted to the CBI for a thorough investigation and for bringing the culprits to book so that the purity of elections to Rajya Sabha is maintained,” EC said.
