MUMBAI: Bringing cheer to Mumbaikers, the police have claimed that there has been a marked reduction in crimes in the financial capital of the country in 2011 compared to the previous year.

The number of crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code, as per the Mumbai police’s annual report stood at 32191, a decrease of 1454 cases compared to 2010.

It is a matter of concern that only 18196 cases had been solved at a dismal rate of 56.52 percent. The Mumbai police can take solace from the fact that their performance in solving cases had improved marginally by 1.10 per cent in 2011 compared to the previous year.

Police have nabbed accused in 51.85 cases of pick-pocketing and 39.73 percent of gold chain snatching incidents. But the police tasted less success in solving cases relating to motor vehicle thefts and house break-ins.

Only 25.37 percent of motor vehicles cases and 36.34 percent of house break-ins were solved. The police have put up a good show in bringing to book the accused in murder cases at 91.58 percent of the total cases. The success rate in arresting accused in  rape case was 95.4 percent. But the disturbing  fact is that the number of rape cases has gone up. The city recorded a rape in every 40 hours accounting for 14 percent increase.
