Income ceiling raised for ST scholarship

Express News Service

The Centre on Thursday decided to increase the family income ceiling under the scholarship scheme ‘Top Class Education’ for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students.

The Union Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved the proposal to increase the ceiling from the existing Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4.50 lakh per annum.

The increase in the ceiling will enable larger number of ST students to avail the benefits of the scheme. This will also act as a major incentive for ST students pursuing higher education. The expenditure on account of the revision would be met under the existing budget allocation for each year.

The scholarship scheme of “Top Class Education” for ST students was initiated in  2007-08.
