Fasting Naidu forcibly given IV fluids

With doctors forcibly administering IV fluids to TDP chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday, thus ending his fast, he is set to return to Hyderabad on Sunday.

With cyclone hitting Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, Naidu decided to return to his state early despite doctors advising him to stay back in the hospital for a few more days.

Chandrababu, who was on Friday forcibly evicted by Delhi police from AP Bhavan and shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, continued his fasting on the sixth day. He also resisted administering IV fluids. When his health deteriorated, doctors forcibly administered intravenous fluids. However, he is yet to take anything orally.

“We were forced to give intravenous drip around 3 pm to avoid further deterioration of his health,” said Dr HK Kar, medical superintendent of RML Hospital.

Dr Kar said, “Intravenously, we are giving injection. We hope he breaks his fast soon. He is yet to take anything orally, except water.”

A team of doctors comprising a cardiologist, two physicians and four resident doctors are monitoring the condition of Chandrababu.

TDP Parliamentary Party leader Nama Nageshwar Rao said that doctors have advised Chandrababu to be in the hospital for at least four days. But Chandrababu prefers to return to Hyderabad on Sunday evening. “Chandrababu might take a final call on Sunday morning,” he said.

Meanwhile, Janata Dal (U) leader Sharad Yadav visited Chandrababu in the hospital and spent half an hour with him. This was the second time that JD (U) chief visited Naidu since he began fast in Delhi.

As Yadav spent a significant period of time with Naidu, there was speculation that it was an attempt to wean away former Andhra Pradesh CM from leaning towards the BJP for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, TDP leaders and workers from Seemandhra region staged dharna at 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, protesting against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Delhi police, who were caught off guard by the unannounced presence of TDP leaders and workers at 10 Janpath, arrested all of them and took them to Thuglak Road police station.
