NEW DELHI: Brooms ruled the streets of the national capital today as the three BJP-led municipal corporations launched their respective sanitation drive as part of the Modi government's ambitious 'Clean India' campaign.
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) initiated its comprehensive sanitation drive under the 'Swachh Bharat Mission' in all its four zones. South Delhi Commissioner Manish Gupta along with other employees also took a pledge to offer labour for 100 hours per year for sanitation, the SDMC said in a statement.
South Delhi Mayor Khushi Ram Chunar while inaugurating the drive, appealed to the councillors to take serious efforts to make the drive a success.
On the occasion, Chunar announced that all the safai karamcharis will perform their duty in two shifts in their duty time of 8 hours. In the first shift they will do usual work and in the second shift they will do the sanitation work of main locations and markets.
He also asked the councillors to ensure 90-95 per cent attendance of safai karamcharis in every zone and identify important sites where there was more garbage and debris.
Commissioner Gupta also appealed all the officials and employees to keep their office, colony and home clean. He emphasised on the behavioural change for sanitation.
On the occasion, students organised street plays, took out rallies to create awareness among citizens.
Leader of the House Subhash Arya said that with active participation of councillors, RWAs, NGOs and citizens, we can surely follow the dream of Gandhiji and make our country clean.
In North Delhi and East Delhi too the respective civic body took up the drive.
All employees of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) gathered around the amphitheatre in the Civic Centre premises, where Commissioner Praveen Kumar Gupta and other senior officials took the lead in taking the cleanliness pledge.
They also vowed to dedicate 100 hours in a year for keeping their surroundings, offices and colonies clean, neat and tidy, the NDMC said in a statement.
The employees of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) too gathered at the Patparganj headquarters and took a pledge for cleanliness, besides vowing to dedicate 100 hours in a year for keeping their surroundings, offices and colonies clean, neat and tidy.
