GUWAHATI:  A mob killed a man, suspecting him to be a cattle thief, and set ablaze his vehicle in Assam's Golaghat district early Monday, police said.

The mob also blocked National Highway 37, demanding police immediately arrest the accomplices of the suspected cattle thief.

Police said that the incident took place around 2 a.m. when some locals intercepted a van carrying six cattle.

"The people asked the driver to show purchase receipts. The driver failed to produce it and the people suspected him to be a cattle thief... It led to the attack and subsequent killing," a police official said.

The dead man has been identified as Junti Ali, police said.
