Karti Has No Illegal Assets, Target is Me: Chidambaram

Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Former finance minister P Chidambaram, who is facing a probe in the Aircel-Maxis deal case, issued a statement on Sunday claiming that Karti Chidambaram was being targeted because “he is my son and the real target is me”.

Chidambaram said the allegation that Karti has undisclosed assets is “preposterous, malicious and totally false”.

Defending Karti, who is facing a probe by the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax investigation wing, Chidambaram said his son’s assets and liabilities had been duly disclosed and that he had no undisclosed asset anywhere. “He and his business are fully compliant with the laws and regulations of the income tax department and of all other regulatory authorities concerned. The allegation that he has undisclosed assets is preposterous, malicious and totally false,” he said.

Chidambaram said the government should publicise a list of such alleged undisclosed assets. He further said that Karti would voluntarily execute any document necessary to transfer those assets, if any. “I am issuing this statement on behalf of all the members of my family. We know that Karti is being targeted only because he is my son and the real target is me,” the Congress leader said.
