NEW DELHI: Rusticate JNU students’ union leader Kanhaiya Kumar. That’s the recommendation of a high-level inquiry committee set up by the vice chancellor (V-C) to enquire into the February 9 commemoration of Afzal Guru’s hanging on the campus. The report submitted to V-C M Jagadesh Kumar on Monday also recommended rustication of Umar Khalid and three other students for their alleged role in the event during which ‘anti-national’ slogans were raised.
The five-member committee unanimously found that some students violated the university’s rules and norms. A meeting of the university’s top brass chaired by the VC on Monday discussed the report following which it said JNU chief proctor A P Dimri will issue showcause notices to 21 students who were found violating the rules of the university, according to the administration. There are provisions in the university rules to take action in such cases. “The high-level committee has recommended rustication of five students after its investigation for over a month. However, the final call will be taken by the V-C and proctor’s office,” a source said.
JNUSU joint secretary and ABVP member Saurabh Sharma said, “I request the administration to put the findings of the committee in the public domain. There should be immediate action on this offense.”
Prof asked to clarify remarks on teachers
JNU has asked its Professor Amita Singh to clarify her alleged remarks calling Dalits and Muslim teachers “anti-national” after the National Commission for Scheduled Caste issued a showcause notice to the university.
March for release of Anirban, Khalid
JNU students will on Tuesday march to Parliament demanding release of Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and SAR Geelani who are jail in a sedition case. Students union president Kanhaiya Kumar is also likely to participate in the march.
