NEW DELHI: The Union government’s national Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme will be innaugurated by Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Gurugram on December 24, during which 15-20 cadets of all states and UTs will be inducted into it. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked state police chiefs to nominate an IPS officer to train the students.
According to the MHA, the key objective of the SPC programme is to counter extremist ideologies in thought and action, and make the youth agents of peace and security. The government has allocated over Rs 400 crore for the programme.
Apart from training the students through specialised teams, they will be given two uniforms—one for training and another for parades, visiting schools, etc.
“A training manual has been prepared by the ministry with the help of states. Students of senior classes will get to know the working of the police, meeting officials and will represent the police in school,” a government official said.
The project was first started by Kerala Police, but last year Rajnath Singh asked MHA to explore the possibility of expanding the SPC programme at the national level.
