NEW DELHI: The Indian missions abroad have received 3,328 complaints from Indian women about marital disputes with their NRI spouses since 2015, the government informed the Rajya Sabha today.
Of the 3,328 complaints, 3,268 were addressed by way of providing the women counselling, guidance and information about procedures, mechanisms for serving judicial summons on the overseas Indian husbands, V K Singh, the Minister of State in the External Affairs Ministry, said in written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
The missions received 796 complaints in 2015, 1,510 in 2016 and 1,022 until November 30 this year.
Singh said assistance is also extended in filing a case against the husband in India, issuing a lookout circular, impounding and revocation of the Indian passport of the husband, and getting access to lawyers and NGOs empanelled with Indian missions and legal and financial assistance, Singh added.
The government, since 2014, has provided assistance to 88,302 Indians residing abroad in the times of emergency and conflict, Singh told the Rajya Sabha.
"Since 2014, an increasing number of women are approaching the government through the social media for assistance. Use of social media is quick and every minute the people are increasingly using this route hence very dynamic," Singh said, adding that the external affairs minister herself receives a large number of requests on her Twitter handle.
