NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday all praise for the recently introduced--Goods and Services Tax system—with him calling GST not just a tax reform but an economic model for the promotion of the culture of honesty in the country. In his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he said, “The GST, which I call the good and simple tax, has shown a positive impact on the economy in a short time.” The PM added that a lot of people called in or wrote to him either praising the GST or seeking clarifications.

As the GST entered one month of implementation, Modi said the successful rollout of GST will be analysed by other countries for years to come. “The GST in India will become a model for other nations. Educational institutes will use it as a case study. The implementation of the single-tax regime in a country of the size of India will inspire research in the world one day,” the PM said.

The PM called GST an example of cooperative federalism saying decisions were taken by both Centre and states. Modi also said that the tax system has facilitated a “friendly environment” between traders and the government.
