At least 23 persons were killed and 39 injured in a rush-hour stampede on a narrow foot-over-bridge (FOB) linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations during heavy rain on Friday.

Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar might be criticized for his poor attendance in the Parliment,  but the 'Master Blaster' had raised the issue of congestion on foot-over bridges in 2016.

Last year Sachin Tendulkar, along with Shiv Sena’s Lok Sabha MP Arvind Sawant had expressed their concerns over the dangers faced by the commuters because of inadequate passage. Sachin has so far raised 22 questions in the Parliment of which eight of them were regarding Railways.

In 2016, Sachin asked the Railway ministry if they had "identified high-density stations which have only one single bridge like Mumbra, Parel and others, for additional bridge construction to enhance safety during peak hours”.

In response to Sachin's query MoS Railways Rajen Gohain had responded with an assurance that provisions for five new FOBs had been sanctioned.
