MUMBAI: A senior TV journalist while trying to board a local train was attacked by a group of regular commuters on the Western Railway on Wednesday morning.
The journalist, Sudhir Shukla, works with a Hindi national news channel. He sustained serious injuries in the attack and is being treated at Dr R N Cooper Municipal General Hospital at Juhu.
Andheri police station of Government Railway Police (GRP) has registered a case and investigations were in progress.
According to Shukla, the issue started when he was boarding a local train at Mira Road.
“I was being prevented from entering the train by the group of passengers who have blocked the footboard. However, I pushed and managed to get in. This led to an argument among them. They then beat me up and injured me,” Shukla told the police.
Shukla, who was bleeding profusely, got down at Andheri and went to the GRP unit and also informed his colleagues and other media persons.
“We would take strong action against the accused,” GRP’s deputy commissioner of police Purshottam Karad.
Media associations like Mumbai Press Club, TV Journalists’ Association, Mumbai Crime Reporters Association, Mantralaya Ani Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh, Mumbai Hindi Patrakar Sangh has condemned the attack and urged the government to take strong action against the assaulters.
