NEW DELHI: Thirty eight Indians who were stranded in Yemen’s Socotra Island due to cyclone Mekunu were rescued by the Indian Navy on Sunday. These Indians, who were stuck at the Socotra Island for nearly 10 days, were all reported to be safe.

In a swift operation, the Navy had on Saturday had diverted its ship INS Sunayna from the Gulf of Aden to Socotra as part of the operation ‘NISTAR’ to rescue the Indians, Navy spokesperson Captain DK Sharma said. He said the stranded Indians were rescued off the coast of Socotra early Sunday morning and they were onboard INS Sunayna. The ship is bringing the Indians back home.

“The evacuated Indians were embarked on board and immediately provided with medical care, food, water and telephone facilities to call and reassure their families at home,” Sharma said, adding that the ship is proceeding towards Porbandar in Gujarat.
