CHANDIGARH: Haryana Police today registered a case against Olympian Jai Bhagwan, who is an inspector in with the state police, for allegedly manhandling and slapping a lady inspector at the State Excise and Taxation Department during an inspection of a liquor outlet in Laxmi Nagar locality in Hisar on May 19.

Sources said that Jai Bhagwan, posted at the CIA branch of Fatehabad district, had called the Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner (DETC) of Hisar and told him that he was checking a liquor vend at Laxmi Vihar locality in the city, and so the concerned official should be sent by the excise department. Around 9 pm on May 19, Neelam Sharma who is posted as Inspector with the excise department reached the liquor vend along with her husband and she was told to show the relevant documents of the liquor vend. But she reportedly told Bhagwan that the vend has been set up as per the excise policy of the state government and thus was not illegal.

In her complaint, she alleged that then Bhagwan and other persons allegedly manhandled her and he also provoked the locals to raise anti-government slogans. She also alleged that she was held hostage for about one hour at the spot.

After the incident, she approached her senior the DETC who submitted the complaint to the Hisar Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police about the incident demanding action against Jai Bhagwan and others for manhandling and obstructing her from performing her duty. He also reported the matter to his seniors in the department.

An Arjuna Awardee, Jai Bhagwan (a boxer who got the job on sports quota) denied all these charged as he termed them baseless and false, and that these were just mere allegations.
