AMETHI:  Union minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi in his own pocket borough, attributed her victory to the development agenda of the Modi government. She said the people of the constituency wanted a representative who would work for them for the next five years.

Irani, a debutant in the Lok Sabha, said the people of Amethi had voted in large numbers for the BJP in 2014 and she had worked in the past five years to keep their faith.

Irani had given a tough fight to Rahul in 2014 but lost. This time, she trounced him by over 55,000 votes in his family seat.

On the BJP’s landslide win, she said it was because of the PM’s development agenda as he wanted people to judge his government on the basis of his work.

The meaning of a people’s representative has changed in the past five years, she said.

Taking a dig at  Rahul, Irani said she had already started working for Amethi’s development as the constituency lacked many facilities.

Later, in a recorded message to the voters, she thanked them for blessing a “common worker of the BJP” and creating a history which was witnessed by the country and world.
