BHUBANESWAR: Wild Orissa, an organisation for conservation of nature and wildlife, has planned a series of programmes to create awareness about environmental issues among the people.
This year, Wild Orissa has joined hands with Earth Day Network India (EDN India) and Sanctuary Nature Foundation for celebrating Earth Day 2017 in Odisha. The programmes started on April 9.
Senior administrators, eminent citizens, environmental organisations, wildlife conservation organisations, educationists, honorary wildlife wardens and publishers gathered here on Friday to deliberate on the subject ‘Environmental Education in the State of Odisha’.
The meeting, as part of a round table conference, recommended that there is a need for making environmental education practical oriented in schools. Besides, more hours should be devoted to the subject every week and linkage between wild species and ecosystem needs to be elaborated, it said.
The conference recommended that adequate space should be provided to schools for undertaking plantations. Conservation of biodiversity including wild animals, birds, reptiles and insects need to be explained. Competitions relating to environment and wildlife should be made part of the annual curriculum, the recommendations stated.
Children need to be explained the indigenous plant species and their regeneration while wildlife conservation organisations should be requested to partner with schools.
Former Director General of Police and State convenor INTACH AB Tripathy, former State Election Commissioner and State convenor, Indian Institute of Public Administration Sanjib Hota, former Principal Chief Conservator of Odisha Saroj Kumar Patnaik and chief spokesperson, Wild Orissa Kulamani Deo were among others who participated in the deliberations.
Secretary, Wild Orissa Monalisa Bhujbal said the proceedings of the conference will be presented to the Government for implementation.
