Russian strategic bombers fly patrol mission from Indonesia

Moscow, Dec 7 (AP) The Russian military says itsstrategic bombers have flown a patrol mission over theSouthern Pacific after taking off from Indonesia, part ofMoscow's efforts to restore its Cold War-era military footholdaround the world.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the two Tu-95 strategicbombers flew from Biak Island in Indonesia's easternmost Papuaprovince where they arrived Tuesday. It said Thursday's patrollasted eight hours.

Russian state television stations reported that thenuclear-capable bombers accompanied by heavy-lift transportplanes would spend a few days on Biak, but there was noimmediate signal that such visits could continue in thefuture.

The bombers' visit to Indonesia marked the first suchdeployment since Cold War times, when Soviet maritime patrolplanes flew over the Pacific from a base in Vietnam. (AP)CPS.
